Papers, 1838-[199-].

This collection chiefly consists of correspondence between members of the John McBryde, Sr. family during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The collection is notable for documenting white middle-class Alabamians. Of particular interest are letters written by four brothers, Daniel, Alexander, John Jr., and Neil C. McBryde, while serving in the Confederate army. Letters written before and after the war describe everyday life in Autauga and Montgomery Counties and southeast Alabama. John Jr.'s daughter, Minnie E. McBryde, wrote most of the letters between l887 and 1904. Some of the letters discuss sewing and include fabric samples. A few contracts to teach school and other items are located in the Correspondence Subgroup for ease of access because they were included in the chronological index created prior to acquisition. Additional contracts to teach, other financial records, and miscellaneous items pertaining to Alexander, John, and Neil C. McBryde which are not indexed are found in Subgroups III, IV, and V. respectively. In addition to school contracts, financial records include receipts, bills, and promissory notes. Neil C. McBryde's records includes a daybook containing attendance records for the school he taught, a contract to teach school, and essay, a poem, and some notes. Subgroup VII contains transcripts of the Correspondence Subgroup and selections from Subgroups III-VI. Genealogical information is located in Subgroup I.
